Sunday May 27th

River Irfon, Gofynne Beat.

May 27th 2007

Sunday was not a nice day. It was wild and wet and it only got worse. However there was the Irfon to fish and that is always something to look forward to. The Irfon has an atmosphere all of its own; mysterious, quiet, with slow flowing sections of great clarity and other parts rushing wildly over bedrock. The river is more intimate than the Wye. The Gofynne beat has all these attributes and a great sense of serenity.

There were fish rising at the bottom of the beat, but the slack pool was sheltered from the gale raging higher up the valley slopes and I suspect the fish were chub that were on the fin, moving around the pool. By the time you made a cast they could be several yards away. Further up the beat there was a pod of fish rising as a hatch of Blue-winged Olives began. They were grayling and some of decent size. They kept feeding for a couple of hours and were a treat to observe, if not the easiest of fish to entice.

The trees along the river have been adorned with nest boxes and the twittering of ynestlings could be heard from many. Anxious overworked parents ferried food to the occupants of the boxes. A Pied Flycatcher hawked for insects from a fence post offering wonderful views in the ever increasing rain. Gofynne is a delightful piece of water that deserves another day with better weather.
